Jennifer Samuta
Director and Migration Solicitor, Samuta McComber Lawyers
Jennifer Samuta (nee McComber) is an Australian legal practitioner, specialising in immigration law. She practices in the niche area of visa cancellations and other complex immigration matters. She represents clients in their visa applications to the Commonwealth Department of Home Affairs (Australian Federal Government Department), regularly appears as a solicitor advocate in merits review proceedings at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (which presides over the independent merits review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government) as well as instructs counsel in the Federal Court and Federal Circuit Court in judicial review proceedings.

On the ground, Jennifer advises and assists clients with their visa applications for temporary or permanent migration to Australia and various complex immigration-legal matters (e.g. possible visa cancellation and deportation matters). She is also an advocate for key immigration-related policies affecting Pacific Islanders living in Australia.

Jennifer holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) degrees from the University of Queensland. She completed her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice with the College of Law and is admitted as a solicitor at the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia.

Since her admission in 2013, Jennifer has worked in refugee and immigration law at community legal centres as well as private practice. After observing a desperate need for new and distinct approaches for legal services to be better accessible to ethnic minorities and those most vulnerable within the community, including those in prison, immigration detention and low socio-economic areas, Jennifer started up her own law practice in 2017: Samuta McComber Lawyers.

Jennifer strives to collaborate with community-based organisations and community leaders to remain culturally appropriate and issue-specific in modern Australia, and to allow for a holistic legal approach that extends beyond the letter of the law. Her understanding and appreciation of cultural sensitivities and functions in the social context has added an invaluable dynamic to her advocacy skills.

Beyond running a busy legal practice, Jennifer is either chasing that adrenaline rush at the gym or her three busy sons. She is a self-confessed foodie and loves travelling to off-the-beaten- track destinations. Along with her husband, she has a start-up eco-tourism project in Rakiraki, Fiji and looks forward to one day retiring and being able to spend more timing painting on the deck of her island shack.
